The Stages of Life: A Journey Towards the Hereafter

Introduction

All praise belongs to Allah ﷻ who created us, sustains us, and reminds us through His words and messengers about the reality of this temporary world.

Reminder to fear Allah, be conscious of our purpose, and remember that we are travelers in this world — our final destination is the Hereafter.

Main Theme: The Temporary Nature of Life

Life is a temporary journey with several stages:

  • Before birth: Our souls existed with Allah.
  • In the womb: A brief stage of preparation.
  • In this world: Our current existence.
  • In the grave: The life of Barzakh.
  • On the Day of Judgment.
  • Final abode: Either Paradise (Jannah) or Hellfire (Jahannam).

The Parable of This Life (from the Qur’an)

Allah describes this life as mere play, amusement, boasting in wealth and children, and rivalry in worldly possessions.

Like a farmer amazed by crops after rain — they grow, flourish, then wither and turn to dust.

Qur’an 57:20
“Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another, and competition in increase of wealth and children…”

The Seasons of Human Life

  • Childhood: Play and games.
  • Teenage years: Obsessed with appearances, fashion, and fitting in.
  • Early adulthood: Pursuit of wealth, status, degrees, jobs.
  • Mature age: Competing in children, properties, cars, businesses.
  • Old age: Decline in strength and health, preparing to leave.

Life parallels nature’s seasons:

  • Spring (Youth)
  • Summer (Strength & Prosperity)
  • Autumn (Decline begins)
  • Winter (Old age & Death)

The Balance Between Dunya and Akhirah

Islam is a balanced way of life — neither complete worldly indulgence nor total detachment.

Provide for your family, work, and earn — but always prioritise your Akhirah.

Live like a traveler passing by — mindful that nothing here is permanent.

Prophet ﷺ said:
“Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveler.”
(Bukhari)

The Real Competition

People naturally compete in wealth, cars, homes, and careers.

But Allah invites us to compete for forgiveness and Jannah.

Qur’an 57:21:
“Race one another in seeking forgiveness from your Lord and Paradise whose width is as the width of the heavens and earth…”

Investment for the Hereafter

Smart believers invest in Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity), good deeds, and calling others to goodness.

Give Da’wah (invite to Islam) — influencing one person can lead to endless rewards even after death.

Like royalties, rewards continue as long as the effect continues.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever guides someone to goodness will have a reward like the one who did it.”
(Muslim)

Conclusion & Key Advice

This life is a one-time opportunity; it will never return.

Prioritize planting good deeds: Salah, charity, fasting, seeking knowledge, and Da’wah.

Balance your worldly needs without neglecting your eternal destination.

Compete not for dunya, but for ranks in Jannah.

Dua:

May Allah ﷻ make us among those who live mindful of our temporary journey, balance our worldly and religious responsibilities, and strive for the highest ranks in Jannah. Ameen.

Closing

Encourage the congregation to reflect on their current stage of life.

Remind them to prepare for their meeting with Allah.

Invite them to start one new good deed today: a prayer, a charity, a kind word, or an act of Da’wah.
